Today in the Garden of a Lifetime: Lady of the Night, full-throated

brunfelsia-nitida-full-on-090112-640

This morning,  Lady of the Night is at the peak of her performance.  The extravagantly long buds have become extravagantly long flowers.  With demure flaring petals at the end of the long trumpets, the blossoms look like a renaissance brass choir announcing the entrance of the queen.

At night, the performance becomes olfactory, too, as the flowers pour out gardenia-like scent.

If the weather stays warm through October, there should be another performance then.  Reserve your seats now!

Here's how to grow this stunning tropical shrub.
