Today in Key West: Striped Dianella

One of the disorienting pleasures of the tropics is to see the landscape bursting with plants that, back home, are oh-so-tender house plants or specimen containers that are proudly placed on your terrace for the Summer.

Up north, striped dianella is just such a signifier of discernment and adventure. Dianella tasmanica 'Variegata' is an (expensive) new sophisticate for smart containers. In Key West, dianella is still smart, still sophisticated—but it's also hardworking as a bullet-proof groundcover for shade. Case in point, this compact front garden.

Here's how to grow dianella.
