The Huge Purple Beech, just days before Hurricane Irene
This mammoth purple-leaved European beech—I'm guessing from the dark leaves even in August that it's the 'Riversi' cultivar—is one of the largest in New England. I'm paying my respect just days before Hurricane Irene, which could be its demise. Crossing my fingers not. I'll report in, weather permitting, right after Irene has passed.
Here's information on growing beeches of all sorts, let alone this Fagus sylvatica 'Riversi', in yesterday's Garden Journal entry on the comparatively-minute thread-leaf beech, F. sylvatica 'Ansorgei'.
